Working from Home or Office

With the advent of the computer and the internet, it's easy to work from home doing several jobs, with clients worldwide.
Working from home may seem like the ultimate job to have, but it can have challenges of it's own.

Sure you can
  • Dress how you like.
  • Work your own hours.
  • Take breaks when you feel like it.
  • Schedules are easily changed.
  • Have no worries about commuting to work.
But also the down side can be

  • Planning a day of uninterrupted day to work is impossible.
  • Friends think they can ring or pop in whenever they find it convenient. And stay as long as they like.
  • You can't answer the phone casually.
  • Clients anywhere in the world will ring you at their convenience, no matter what the time is for you.
  • Local clients will ring you at 9am, not knowing or caring if you just worked all night and have only just gone to sleep.
  • Clients expect emails to be answered promptly, especially if they are sent within your workday, to bad if you are busy doing something else.
  • With worldwide clients, there's no such think as a weekend, and local holidays are not respected.
Depending on the type of work you do at home, often your income is not regular, and related to the work you do. Because there are plenty of other people that can do what you do, often you have to have competitive rates. Competitive mean lower than you would usually charge, often meaning you are living from month to month, no room in the budget to save money for a rainy day.

There are of course many other pro's and cons of working from home, but this is just a few things to consider.
