Words in Web Design

What use are words in the design of a website?
Too many words, are a mistake on a website.
Think about it, when you go to a website, how much do you read?
Sure once you find the page you want to you might read the words on it, but only if it isn't 50 paragraphs long,
if you are at a website to buy something, all you want is, to first find the product, and once you do find it, you just want to check it's exactly what you want, more often than not if you can see a product from 3 or 4 directions or views, that's enough for you to decide to buy it or not. Our SEF CMS allows you to add upto 5 different photos of the same product
If the photos don't show various features you may want to read a short description
So you may think, whats the use of words on a website, well words are what get buyers to your website in the first place, search engines can't read pictures, so can't rank your website in the search results for just pictures, sometimes on some pages you may need a lot of words, but a few select words that visitors actually read, are far better than thousands of words, that no-one ever reads only the search engines.
These words should to be written by a professional, someone like a content writer, who knows exactly how to write words that people can and will read.

Are pictures or words more important on a website?
Good quality pictures are vital on a website, nothing put's a visitor off more that snapshots or poorly focused pictures.
So you have 4 options, either hire a photographer to do a photo shoot, which costs around 2K and even then you can't be sure you will get that great photo, with perfect lighting.
You can take the photos yourself, just take hundreds and hundreds of photo, on different days, in different light, and then go through them, and find the very best ones, or
Pay your web designer to look for photos at their favourite stock photo bank, or a good web designer will often take photos,
Or it's well worth your sending a couple of days at a stock photo bank, looking for good quality pictures, istockphoto.com has a large range of quality photo's, and most of the web sized photos only cost $1.50 each.
All you do is become a member, make a light box, do a lot of searches, and add any photo you see that reflects your business to the light box, then look at the photos in your light box, and delete and delete until you have about 4 photos for each page on your website. Your web designer won't use all 4 photos, but needs the choice.
Send the lightbox to your webdesigner, and ask them to take a look, they will choose the best photo/s for a page, and then you just buy the photo's your web designer wants.... easy....
Now you aren't going to get fantastic photos for $1.50 each, and the problem with royalty free stock photo's is you could well see the same photo on your competitors website, but for reasonably good photos, if you spend enough time looking you can find some stunners there, there's just a lot to look though a lot of photos to find them....
Buying a rights protected photo, and buying the rights to use a photo exclusively can cost several thousand dollars per photo, just for 1 years use. if you have the budget to do it, then go for it, but most small business' don't have that sort of money, so royalty free photos are a good alternative.

Is a great web design enough?
A great web design is great, once your visitors find your website.
But the most wonderful website design isn't much good if no-one can find the website...
So what makes people find your website?
Two things will get to your website found in search engines... A well thought out domain name, and SEO, search Engine Optimization or Optimisation.
You may have hear about SEO or SEM before, but what is it exactly?
SEO is really putting up sign posts to your website, the sign posts appear in search engines, for whatever product service or advice you are selling.
I think of myself as a website GPS, no not Global Positioning System, although it is, Google Positioning Strategist, or I implement a Google Placement Strategy.
In case you haven't guessed, I'm the SEO, Lynny, and I also offer SEO CONSULTANCY I tell my SEO Consultant clients how to do their own SEO
If I set up enough signposts to your website you will get the visitors you want, but more importantly the visitors you receive will spend money.... they whole reason for having a website.
For a
website that is attractive to your visitors, and get's visitors to you website,

The look of a website is important...
Did you know that those websites that you occasionally visit that you think WOW, what a great design, are usually websites owners that have hired a web designer, and given them free rein.
I belong to many many business groups online, and have discussed this many many times, the most effective websites, websites that work, websites that do what they are supposed to do, whether that's sell products, have a visitor pick up the phone, or use the contact form, whatever, most successful websites, don't appeal to the owner.
They hired a web designer, and left the design to the web designer. After all that's what you hire them for isn't it.
Web Design is not about what you like, it's about what will appeal to your visitors, make them want to take the next step, and spend money for some reason.
Great web design will make you money!!!

What is a Web Designer? What is Web Design?
A web designer, is someone that design's the look of your website, they usually have an artistic background and have an eye for what looks good. They also know what appeals to various target markets.
So they will design an attractive looking website, a website that will appeal to it's visitors.
Many web designers, in fact every web designer I've ever spoken to, get frustrated with clients, who although they hire a web designer, then the client decides they know what looks best, and will take an attractive looking design, and insist that they must have their favorite color orange on a website that was designed to be attract other businesses to buy their good, so was designed in shades of blue.
Believe me Orange does not look good with 4 shades of blue that complement each other.
Our designer has built several websites, far more than are in her portfolio, that she refuses to put into her portfolio, because they are so "what the client insisted on" and are quite frankly hideous.

Getting a website designed and build, that is SEO friendly, truly SEO friendly is fairly uncommon.
Most web designers profess they know how to do SEO.
I haven't yet met a web designer that did know SEO, oh sure they may know the basics, the SEO you are taught in school, the SEO services, that everyone knows, but they don't have a real understand of the deep core of SEO.
Even our web designer doesn't know how to make an SEO friendly website, she has a basic idea, but since she sits not 5 foot from me, and we can see each others monitors, I can make sure her websites have all the right mixture in them to make them SEO friendly. And afterwards I can tweak what she does, just to make sure that if a client wants the very best search engine results or rankings, they get it.
We have an SEF CMS (Search Engine Friendly, Content Management System) which for ungeek speaky people, means a website you can make changes yourself on, and it's Search Engine Friendly.
But Still it's possible to make a Search Engine Friendly Website UnSearch Engine Friendly.
Unsearch Engine friendly, now that a new phrase. And it is always possible to make a website more search engine friendly.
Are you confused.... visit www.canzdesign.com request a quote, tell us how much you want to spend,on a SEF CMS and we'll see if we can help, if we take you on as a client, you will never be so well looked after.
